What is play therapy?
Play therapy is a form of counseling by which a licensed mental health professional, who has extensive training in play therapy, uses play-based models and techniques to better communicate with and help clients achieve healing and better mental health well-being.

Why is play therapy used?
As human beings, we communicate in various ways inclusive of words, body language, gestures and energetic avenues.  The most recognized way of communicating can be said to be use of words – but play is the natural language of children – and also the natural language of our inner child as adults. When playing, we express our experiences and feelings through a natural, self-guided process. We learn behaviors and boundaries, design and test ideas, develop interests, and explore relationships with ourselves and others. This process allows a licensed mental health professional, who has extensive training in play therapy, to observe and interact in order to help the client achieve optimal mental health in terms of healing, interconnectedness, self-esteem building and relational discovery/mastery.

Play is our innate language. In recent years, a growing number of mental health professionals have observed that play is as important to human happiness as love and work. Some of the greatest philosophers of all time such as Aristotle and Plato have reflected on why play is so fundamental in our lives. The many benefits of play therapy include: 1) elevates our spirits and brightens our outlook on life; 2) expands self-expression, self-knowledge, self-actualization and self-efficacy; 3) relieves feelings of stress and boredom; 4) connects us to others in a positive way; 4) stimulates creative thinking/problem-solving and exploration; 5) helps regulate our emotions;  6) boosts our self-confidence; and 7) allows us to practice skills and roles needed to for survival. Learning and development can best be fostered by play because it allows us to involve all of our senses and connect our mind, body and spirit.
